The sudden retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket have created a leadership void in the Indian team, sparking discussions about who should take over the captaincy. Among the names being considered, Jasprit Bumrah has found strong support from veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, who believes the fast bowler "deserves the captaincy."

Ashwin voiced his opinion on his YouTube channel, acknowledging the challenging times ahead for the Indian cricket team following the twin retirements. He emphasized the need for coach Gautam Gambhir to usher in a new era, especially with the crucial five-Test tour of England looming in June. Ashwin highlighted that the team travelling to England would be significantly different, potentially with Bumrah as the most senior player and a viable captaincy option. He stated, "I believe he deserves the captaincy, but the Indian selectors will take a decision based on his physical capacity."

Bumrah's credentials as a leader are noteworthy. He has previously captained India in Tests, including one match in England and two in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the Perth Test, where Rohit Sharma was absent, Bumrah led India to a memorable victory. However, reports suggest that Bumrah has opted out of the captaincy race due to concerns about workload management and his inability to commit to playing all five Tests in the England series. He had previously missed the Champions Trophy due to a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite Bumrah's reported withdrawal, Sunil Gavaskar has also endorsed him for the captaincy, dismissing workload concerns. Gavaskar believes that Bumrah, as a bowler, is the best judge of when he needs to bowl and can effectively manage his fitness and responsibilities as captain.

While Bumrah's leadership qualities are evident, the selectors must also consider his fitness and availability. According to reports, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are now the frontrunners for the Test captaincy. Gill, at 25, is seen as a strong prospect for long-term leadership, while Pant's potential is also being recognized.

Ultimately, the decision rests with the Indian selectors, who will need to weigh various factors, including leadership experience, player availability, and long-term prospects. The announcement of the new Test captain is expected by May 24, and the chosen leader will have the responsibility of guiding India through a crucial phase in Test cricket.
