Devon Toews' 2024-25 Season: An In-Depth Performance Review and Grade for the Colorado Avalanche Defenseman

Devon Toews remains a cornerstone of the Colorado Avalanche defense heading into the 2024-25 NHL season. Fresh off signing a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension that locks him in with the Avalanche through the 2030-31 season, Toews is expected to continue providing stability, defensive prowess, and underrated offensive contributions. The Avalanche acquired Toews in October 2020, and since then, he has consistently been among the league's best in plus/minus.

Toews's impact extends beyond statistics. He's a calming presence on the ice, known for his positional awareness and ability to make smart plays. While he doesn't possess the same offensive flash as his frequent defensive partner, Cale Makar, Toews excels at the "little things" that contribute to winning hockey. His versatility allows him to play on either side of the defensive pairing, and he boasts an accurate shot from the point.

Last season, 2023-24, Toews played all 82 games for the first time in his career, averaging 23:26 of ice time per night. While his ice time was slightly down compared to previous seasons, he saw an uptick in goal scoring, potting 12 goals, just one shy of his career-best. He also increased his takeaway total, showcasing his defensive awareness. His point production remained consistent at 50 points, all scored at even strength, underscoring his reliability.

Entering his fifth season with the Avalanche, the team will likely rely heavily on Toews, especially with the challenges they face to start the season. The Avalanche need Toews to maintain his high level of play and continue to be a defensive anchor. He consistently earns votes for the Norris and Lady Byng Trophies, a testament to his skill and discipline. While Makar often receives more attention, Toews's importance to the Avalanche cannot be overstated; he is a player the team can depend on in all situations.

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, projections suggest Toews will maintain a similar level of production. At 31 years old, he is still in his prime. Expect him to play around 80 games and record a stat line in the range of 11-41-52 (goals-assists-points). It is not impossible for him to exceed 60 points for the first time in his career, but it is unlikely.

Toews's contract reflects his value to the Avalanche. His $7.25 million average annual value is a significant investment, but one the Avalanche clearly believe is worthwhile. As General Manager Chris MacFarland stated when Toews signed the extension, he has emerged as one of the best defensemen in the NHL and is a huge part of the team's core.
