Ollie Pope has been confirmed to bat at number three for England in the first Test against India, which begins on June 20th at Headingley. This decision means that Jacob Bethell, the young Warwickshire left-hander, will miss out on a place in the starting XI.

The choice between Pope and Bethell has been a subject of much discussion leading up to the match. Bethell had made a compelling case for inclusion, particularly after impressing during England's tour of New Zealand where he scored three fifties while batting at number three. However, Pope, the current vice-captain, solidified his position with a century against Zimbabwe in the lead-up to the India series.

England team director Rob Key addressed the selection dilemma, emphasizing that the decision wouldn't define either player's career. He acknowledged that both are highly talented and that having such options is a positive situation for the team. He also defended Bethell's decision to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) instead of playing in the Test match against Zimbabwe. Key believes that Bethell's experience in the IPL would ultimately benefit his development as a cricketer.

Despite missing out on this occasion, Bethell remains a part of the 14-man squad. His inclusion reflects the faith that the England management has in his potential. While he doesn't have a professional century to his name yet, his talent is undeniable. He will need to be patient and continue to hone his skills, ready to seize any opportunity that comes his way.

Pope's selection indicates that he retains the backing of captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. While Pope's overall Test average stands at a respectable 35.49, his numbers against India (24.60) and in the Ashes (15.70) have raised some concerns. This series against India presents Pope with a valuable chance to address those concerns and establish himself as a mainstay in the England batting lineup.

The England XI for the first Test includes Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir. Chris Woakes makes a return to the Test team for the first time since December. Brydon Carse is set to make his first Test appearance on home soil, having previously played in Pakistan and New Zealand.
