As the highly anticipated Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India draws near, all eyes are set on the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, commencing on Friday, June 20, 2025. Amidst the buzz, a key point of discussion has been India's batting order, particularly the crucial No. 3 position. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant has stepped forward to clear the air, providing valuable insights into the team's strategy.

In a pre-match press conference held on Wednesday, June 18, Pant confirmed that he will be retaining his usual No. 5 spot in the batting lineup. More significantly, he announced that newly appointed captain Shubman Gill is slated to bat at No. 4. This decision addresses speculations surrounding Gill's role and provides clarity on the top order composition. Pant, however, stated that the debate about who will bat at the No. 3 position is still ongoing.

With the retirements of veteran batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the Indian batting order is in a transitional phase. Gill's move to No. 4 signifies a major reshuffle, entrusting him with the responsibility of filling the void left by Kohli. Previously, Gill has played as an opener and more recently at No. 3. His shift to No. 4 reflects the team management's confidence in his ability to solidify the middle order.

Regarding the No. 3 position, the team has several options to consider. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are strong contenders for the role. Nair is making a comeback to the Test side after seven years, boosted by a remarkable Ranji Trophy season and a double century against England Lions in June. Sudharsan has also been in excellent form, demonstrating consistency in domestic tournaments. The final decision on the No. 3 position will likely be made after assessing the pitch conditions closer to the match day.

Pant emphasized his excellent rapport with Gill, highlighting the importance of their off-field camaraderie. He expressed his belief that their friendship and comfort level would translate into a special partnership on the field. Pant also acknowledged the challenge of playing in England, where overhead conditions can significantly impact the game. He urged the batting group to embrace the challenge, play positively, and respect the conditions.

With England also in a transitional phase after the retirements of legendary bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Pant admitted that their absence was a slight relief, but cautioned against complacency. He stressed the importance of focusing on their own strengths and executing their plans effectively.

As the first Test approaches, the Indian team is focused on fine-tuning their preparations and finalizing their strategies. The confirmation of Gill and Pant's batting positions provides stability and clarity, while the decision on the No. 3 spot remains a key point of deliberation. With a blend of youth and experience, the Indian team is determined to make a strong start to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
