Quincy Promes, the Dutch soccer player, has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands on Friday, June 20, 2025, where he is expected to serve jail time for drug trafficking and assault convictions. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service has confirmed that Promes is now in Dutch custody and en route to the Netherlands.

Promes, aged 33, is a former player for Ajax and Sevilla and has also played for Spartak Moscow. He earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals, before his legal issues effectively ended his international career.

The series of legal troubles began in 2023 when a Dutch court sentenced Promes in absentia to six years in prison. This sentence was related to his involvement in importing and exporting hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in 2020. The cocaine shipments originated from Brazil and passed through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, before reaching the Netherlands. Promes has denied these allegations, and his lawyers have stated that he is appealing the conviction.

In a separate case, Promes was also sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison for assault. This conviction stemmed from a 2020 incident where he stabbed his cousin in the knee during a family dispute. He has also denied these charges and is appealing this conviction as well.

Promes was arrested in Dubai in March of last year at the request of the Dutch Public Prosecution Service while he was in Dubai for a Spartak Moscow training camp. Although he was later released, restrictions were imposed, preventing him from leaving the United Arab Emirates. Spartak Moscow terminated his contract, and he subsequently joined United FC, a second-tier club in Dubai.

Prior to his extradition, Promes and his legal team had sought a plea deal with the Dutch Public Prosecutor's office. However, this request was turned down last month. With his extradition, Promes will now have to face the consequences of his convictions in the Netherlands, where he will be required to serve his jail sentences, pending the outcome of his appeals.
