New Jersey Devils: Evaluating Shane LaChance at Training Camp - A Potential NHL Opportunity?

The New Jersey Devils should seriously consider giving Shane LaChance a prolonged look during the upcoming training camp. The 21-year-old left-winger, acquired from the Edmonton Oilers earlier this year, possesses a unique combination of size, leadership qualities, and a burgeoning skillset that could make him a valuable asset to the team's future.

LaChance's most immediately noticeable attribute is his imposing physical presence. Standing at 6'5" and weighing around 220 pounds, he already has the NHL-ready frame that many prospects spend years developing. This size isn't just for show; LaChance uses it effectively, playing a physical game and demonstrating a willingness to engage along the boards and in front of the net. While some scouts have described his offensive upside as limited, his size and willingness to go to the dirty areas could translate into a net-front presence on the power play, something the Devils could utilize.

Beyond his physical attributes, LaChance brings valuable leadership experience. He captained Boston University, and before that, also wore the 'C' for Youngstown in the USHL, showcasing his ability to lead and inspire teammates. This leadership quality, combined with his work ethic, makes him a player who could positively influence the locker room, even if he begins his professional career in the AHL with the Utica Comets.

His offensive game is also developing. In his sophomore season at Boston University, LaChance posted 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 40 games. The Devils signed LaChance to a two-year entry-level contract that begins in the 2025-2026 season, and he finished the 2024-2025 season with the Utica Comets, registering one goal and one assist in two games. While these numbers don't scream top-line potential, they indicate a player who is steadily improving and finding ways to contribute offensively. What stands out is his hockey sense and hand-eye coordination, attributes that are hard to teach and can be honed with proper coaching.

Furthermore, LaChance's defensive game should not be overlooked. Some reports suggest that his defensive positioning and awareness are among the best in the Devils' prospect pool. He is described as being responsible in his own zone, unafraid to block shots, and effective at using his size and stick to disrupt opposing players. This defensive reliability is a valuable asset, especially for a player who is likely to start his NHL career in a bottom-six role.

It's also worth noting that hockey runs in the LaChance family. His father, Scott LaChance, is currently the head of U.S. scouting for the New Jersey Devils, meaning he has a solid understanding of the game and the organization he hopes to play for.

Of course, LaChance is not a guaranteed NHL star. He still has areas of his game to refine, including his skating. However, his unique blend of size, leadership, improving offensive skills, and defensive responsibility makes him a compelling prospect. The Devils should take full advantage of training camp to evaluate LaChance thoroughly. Give him opportunities to play in various situations, alongside different linemates, and against NHL-caliber competition. A strong showing at training camp could very well earn Shane LaChance a spot on the Devils' opening night roster or at least position him as one of the first call-ups from Utica. At the very least, it will provide invaluable insights into his potential and help the Devils make informed decisions about his development path.
