The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is already delivering shock results and compelling storylines, with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami set to face Paris Saint-Germain in a tantalizing last-16 showdown, while Atletico Madrid have been eliminated in the group stage.

Inter Miami's journey to the knockout phase saw them draw 2-2 with Palmeiras in a thrilling match. Inter Miami initially took a 2-0 lead with goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez. However, Palmeiras fought back with two goals in the final 10 minutes to level the score, resulting in both teams progressing to the next round. This result confirmed Inter Miami as the first MLS team to reach the Club World Cup knockout rounds. Now, they are set to face the formidable challenge of Paris Saint-Germain.

The match between Inter Miami and PSG is scheduled for Sunday, June 29, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. This game marks a reunion between Messi and his former club, PSG, whom he left in 2023 to join Inter Miami. Several other Inter Miami players, including Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez, will also be reunited with their former coach, Luis Enrique, who managed them at Barcelona. Luis Enrique, now at the helm of PSG, guided them to their first Champions League title this season.

While Inter Miami celebrates their progression, Atletico Madrid suffered an early exit from the tournament. Despite a late 1-0 victory against Botafogo, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann's goal, Diego Simeone's team was unable to secure a spot in the last 16. Atletico, PSG, and Botafogo all concluded the group stage with six points; however, Atletico Madrid were eliminated due to goal difference, a consequence of their 4-0 defeat to PSG. This shocking elimination marks a significant setback for Atletico Madrid, who had hoped for a strong showing in the expanded Club World Cup.

The Club World Cup continues to deliver surprises and exciting matchups. Inter Miami's clash with PSG promises to be a highlight, while Atletico Madrid's unexpected departure serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of the tournament.
