Enzo Fernandez's Chelsea career has been a topic of much discussion since his record-breaking move from Benfica in February 2023. After a period of adaptation and fluctuating form, the Argentine midfielder seems to have finally found his footing at Stamford Bridge, just in time for a reunion with his former club in the FIFA Club World Cup.

For a long while, the weight of his hefty price tag seemed to burden Fernández, but as Chelsea prepares to face Benfica in the Club World Cup on Saturday, he is finally demonstrating why the Blues invested so heavily in him. In Chelsea's recent 3-0 victory over Esperance of Tunisia, which secured their spot in the last 16, Fernández showcased his creative prowess by providing two assists. This performance, coupled with his overall contributions in recent months, has solidified his role as a key player for Chelsea.

Under the guidance of manager Enzo Maresca, Fernández has been deployed in a more advanced role, which has unlocked his potential for goals and assists. This tactical tweak has allowed him to contribute more directly to the attack, rather than solely dictating play from a deeper position. The results speak for themselves: Fernández has amassed an impressive 14 goals and assists in 2025, surpassing his teammates. His overall goal contributions for the season reached 25 and is only one behind Cole Palmer.

Fernández's improved form has been instrumental in Chelsea's success this season. He helped the team secure a Champions League spot by finishing fourth in the Premier League and played a vital role in their UEFA Conference League triumph in May. In the Conference League final against Real Betis, Fernández inspired Chelsea's comeback by scoring the first goal in an eventual 4-1 victory. His contributions extend beyond goals and assists. He's created more than 50 goal-scoring opportunities this calendar year, the most of any Chelsea player.

The upcoming Club World Cup match against Benfica in Charlotte holds special significance for Fernández. It will be his first encounter against his former club since his departure in 2023. Despite his short stint at Benfica, he left a lasting impact, and his contributions were highly valued. Although his exit was not ideal, Fernández has expressed gratitude for the support he received from the club.

Chelsea has won all three of their previous meetings with Benfica. As Chelsea prepares to face Benfica, all eyes will be on Fernández, who is eager to showcase his growth and development since leaving Lisbon. His current form suggests that he is more than ready for the challenge, and a strong performance against his former club would further solidify his status as a key player for Chelsea.
