Sunderland are reportedly in discussions to sign Atlético Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava on a free transfer, as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. The experienced full-back's contract with the Spanish club is nearing its end, presenting an opportunity for the Black Cats to bolster their defensive options without a transfer fee.

Reinildo Mandava, a 31-year-old Mozambique international, has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including Nottingham Forest and Leeds United. Clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia are also reportedly in contention for his signature. Despite the widespread interest, Sunderland are hoping to convince Reinildo that the Stadium of Light is the right destination for the next chapter of his career.

The defender is a versatile player, capable of operating at left-back and as a centre-back in a three-man defense. This adaptability is likely to be a key factor in Sunderland's interest, as they seek to add depth and experience to their squad. Reinildo has a wealth of experience playing in La Liga and the Champions League with Atlético Madrid, making 102 appearances for the club over three years. His experience could prove invaluable to Sunderland as they navigate the challenges of the Premier League.

However, Reinildo's recent contract situation at Atlético Madrid has been somewhat uncertain. While he had a clause in his contract that would have triggered an automatic one-year extension if he played at least 45 minutes in 50% of the team's games this season, it was reported in April 2025 that he was unlikely to meet that requirement. Despite agreeing to a short-term contract extension to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, he is still expected to leave Atlético Madrid this summer.

Sunderland's pursuit of Reinildo highlights their ambition to strengthen their squad ahead of their Premier League return. The club has already made one signing this summer, securing a permanent deal for Enzo Le Fée. However, they have also seen the departure of Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of €33 million plus add-ons. With the funds from Bellingham's sale, Sunderland are expected to be active in the transfer market as they look to build a squad capable of competing in the top flight. Other reported transfer targets for Sunderland include Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Nice goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.

Reinildo's potential arrival would provide competition and cover in the left-back position, where Sunderland have been looking to strengthen. The Black Cats have also been linked with other left-backs, including Aston Villa's Alex Moreno and Nottingham Forest's Harry Toffolo. If Reinildo joins Sunderland, he would become the first player from Mozambique to play in the Premier League.
