The Vegas Golden Knights have made a significant splash in the free agency market by acquiring Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a sign-and-trade deal. The 28-year-old winger has inked an eight-year contract with the Golden Knights worth $96 million, carrying an average annual value of $12 million.

Marner, who would have become an unrestricted free agent, agreed to the deal with Vegas ahead of being able to sign only a seven-year contract on the open market. The trade marks the end of Marner's nine seasons with the Maple Leafs, a tenure filled with both excitement and frustration.

In the 2024-25 season, Marner showcased his offensive prowess, recording 27 goals and 75 assists for a total of 102 points in 81 games. His performance placed him fifth in the NHL scoring charts. During the playoffs, he contributed two goals and 11 assists in 13 games.

Drafted fourth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2015, Marner has consistently been a key player for Toronto. Over his 657 career games with the Leafs, he has accumulated 221 goals and 741 points, ranking fifth in all-time scoring for the franchise. He aided the team in securing nine consecutive playoff appearances and two division titles. However, the Maple Leafs only managed to advance past the first round of the playoffs twice during his time with the team.

Marner is known for his exceptional playmaking abilities, vision, and puck-handling skills. He excels at creating scoring opportunities for his teammates and driving the offense.

The acquisition of Marner is expected to have a significant impact on the Golden Knights, solidifying their position as a top contender in the Western Conference.
