Ravi Shastri has lauded Shubman Gill for the technical adjustments he has made to his batting technique, particularly his defensive game, highlighting a stark contrast from Gill's previous experiences in England. Shastri observed that Gill's improved control and defensive capabilities have transformed him into a more formidable player.

During a discussion on Sky Sports Cricket, Shastri drew a comparison between Gill and Virat Kohli, pointing out that Gill's previous approach in England was reminiscent of Kohli's, characterized by "hard hands" and pushing at the ball. However, Shastri noted a significant change in Gill's technique, with his "top hand in much more control". This adjustment allows Gill to let the ball come to him, trusting his defense, and showcasing a full array of shots when attacking.

Shastri emphasized that Gill has worked diligently on his defense. He noted that Gill now allows the ball to come onto the bat, demonstrating trust in his defensive technique. Shastri added that Gill possesses a wide range of shots and can drive and pull the ball effectively. According to Shastri, this refinement in his defensive approach has greatly benefited Gill.

Gill's recent performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston showcased his improved technique and temperament. Coming in at number four, Gill exhibited remarkable poise and application, remaining unbeaten on 114 off 216 balls, including 12 boundaries. His innings helped India reach 310/5 at stumps on Day 1. This century was his second in as many matches as captain, following a match-defining 147 at Headingley.

Gill's unbeaten 114, coupled with an unbroken 99-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, helped India recover from a potentially precarious situation. Shastri acknowledged the importance of this partnership, stating that it had rescued India from a possible spot of bother. He stressed the importance of India adding at least another 150 runs to their total on the following day.

Shastri described Gill's performance as "superb," highlighting his discipline, solidness, and fantastic overall play. He acknowledged the pressure Gill faced, particularly after criticism of the team's composition, which saw Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav left out. Gill's innings demonstrated his ability to absorb pressure and anchor the innings, especially during a challenging evening spell.

At 25 years old and just weeks into his captaincy, Gill is displaying the qualities of a long-term leader. His consecutive centuries as captain place him in an elite group of Indian captains, alongside Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. He is also the fifth Indian to score a century at Edgbaston, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli, Pant, and Jadeja.
