Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins has suffered a Grade 2 sprain in his left thumb and will be placed on the 10-day injured list. The injury occurred during Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins.

Hoskins sustained the injury while tagging Miami's Eric Wagaman in the fourth inning. Shortstop Joey Ortiz made an errant throw, pulling Hoskins off the bag, and Hoskins experienced soreness in his thumb while making the catch and tag. Despite the discomfort, he finished the inning, but was then replaced by Jake Bauers in the fifth.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy acknowledged the severity of the injury, stating it "doesn't look great". He noted that while initial X-rays came back negative, further evaluation via MRI revealed the sprain. Murphy also emphasized the importance of the thumb in hitting, saying, "It's your bottom hand for swinging, so it's really, really important". Hoskins himself admitted he didn't feel comfortable swinging the bat after the injury.

Prior to the injury, Hoskins contributed an RBI triple in the second inning of Saturday's game. This was his first triple in over three years.

Hoskins has been a key member of the Brewers lineup this season, batting .242 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 82 games. However, he has experienced a slump since June 1, hitting .170 with three home runs and seven RBIs in that time.

The Brewers will now have to adjust their lineup in Hoskins' absence. Jake Bauers started in his place in Sunday's game. The team hopes Hoskins will recover quickly and return to his role in the lineup soon.

Hoskins, 32, is in his second season with the Brewers, after spending his first six MLB seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He missed the 2023 season after tearing his ACL during spring training. Throughout his career, he has maintained a .238 batting average with 186 home runs and 529 RBIs.
