The Australian women's national football team, the Matildas, suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat against Panama in an international friendly match held at Hands Oval in Bunbury, Western Australia on July 5, 2025. Sherline King's second-half goal secured the victory for Panama, marking the first loss for the Matildas under coach Joe Montemurro.

The match was physically intense, with Panama receiving five yellow cards. Australia dominated possession with 64% in the first half. However, they struggled to convert this advantage into goals against Panama's robust defense. Riley Tanner of Panama had a notable chance in the first half, hitting the woodwork. Emily Gielnik had a free kick opportunity for Australia, but her shot went over the crossbar.

In the second half, Marta Cox of Panama forced a save from Australian goalkeeper Teagan Micah, with Sherline King scoring from the rebound. Australia almost responded immediately, but Alex Chidiac's close-range shot was cleared off the line.

Several substitutions were made by Australia, including debuts for Adriana Taranto, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, Grace Kuilamu, and Alexia Apostolakis. Michelle Heyman had a late opportunity to equalize, but her shot hit the crossbar.

The Panamanian team faced injury setbacks with goalkeeper Yenith Bailey and midfielder Deysire Salazar injured during the match. Both players were substituted and are undergoing physiotherapy. Despite these injuries, Panama's coach, Toña Is, expressed pride in her team's historic victory against a top-ranked team like Australia.

Australia and Panama are scheduled to face each other again on July 8, 2025, at HBF Park in Perth. Australia will aim to bounce back from the defeat, while Panama seeks to continue their winning momentum.

This match was the first of two friendlies between Australia and Panama. The game provided valuable experience for the Australian team, especially for the debutantes.
