The India-England Test series has become a focal point of cricketing discussion, with India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, presenting a formidable challenge to Ben Stokes' leadership of the English side. Following India's commanding 336-run victory at Edgbaston, which leveled the five-match series at 1-1, former England captain Michael Atherton has asserted that Stokes faces the "sternest challenge" of his captaincy.

Atherton highlighted the psychological impact of the Edgbaston defeat, emphasizing the need for Stokes to rally his players ahead of the crucial third Test at Lord's. He drew parallels to Stokes' own admission after the Leeds Test, where he sought three days of isolation for mental recovery, suggesting that Stokes now needs to utilize a similar period to refocus the entire squad.

The pressure on Stokes is further intensified by Gill's impressive start to his Test captaincy career. At 25 years and 258 days, Gill is the fifth-youngest cricketer to captain India in Tests. He led India to a historic victory at Edgbaston, their first-ever Test win at the venue, while also breaking Sunil Gavaskar's 49-year-old record to become the youngest Indian captain to secure an overseas Test win. Gill's exceptional batting form, including scores of 269 and 161 at Edgbaston, has further fueled India's success. Before the Edgbaston Test, Gill faced questions about resting Jasprit Bumrah, but his performance silenced critics.

Jos Buttler, who played under Gill in the IPL, describes him as a blend of his predecessors, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, predicting that Gill will ultimately forge his own distinct leadership style. Mohammad Kaif, another former Indian cricketer, went so far as to say that Gill's captaincy in the first Test was superior to that of Ben Stokes.

Atherton has also suggested potential changes to the England XI, specifically recommending a refreshed fast-bowling attack. The pre-series discussions in England had revolved around the Ashes, seemingly overlooking the India series. However, the recent turn of events has shifted the focus, with many now recognizing the magnitude of the challenge that India poses.

The five-Test series is part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. The remaining schedule is: Third Test at Lord's (July 10), Fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester (July 23), and the Fifth Test at Kennington Oval, London (July 31).

Shubman Gill's rise to Test captaincy marks a new era in Indian cricket, succeeding Rohit Sharma. Gill has previously captained India A and has experience leading in first-class matches and the IPL. His leadership skills will be tested against an England team led by Ben Stokes, who now faces immense pressure to regroup and respond after the Edgbaston defeat. Michael Atherton believes that the Lord's Test will be a "massive test" of Ben Stokes' leadership and his "own mental and physical resilience".
