The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant move to bolster their prospect pool, acquiring forward Isaac Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for center Sam O'Reilly. The deal, announced Tuesday night, sees the Oilers land a highly touted prospect in Howard, while the Lightning add a promising young center in O'Reilly.

Howard, 21, is coming off a stellar season with Michigan State University, where he recorded 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 37 games. His outstanding performance earned him the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in NCAA Men's Hockey. The 5-foot-11 winger was originally drafted by the Lightning in the first round, 31st overall, in the 2022 NHL Draft. Following the trade, the Oilers have signed Howard to a three-year, entry-level contract.

O'Reilly, 19, was the Oilers' first-round pick, 32nd overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. Last season, he played for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he tallied 28 goals and 43 assists for 71 points in 62 regular-season games. He also contributed 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 17 OHL playoff games, helping the Knights win the J. Ross Robertson Cup. O'Reilly further showcased his talent at the Memorial Cup, recording two goals and three assists in five games as the Knights captured the championship.

Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman has been pursuing Howard for weeks, recognizing his potential to contribute to the team's offense. Howard's offensive skills and scoring ability made him an attractive target for the Oilers, who are looking to add more firepower to their lineup. Some hockey analysts believe Howard is more likely to make the Oilers roster and contribute to the team's success in the near future compared to O'Reilly. This is particularly important for the Oilers, who are aiming to capitalize on their Stanley Cup window.

Howard also represented the United States at the 2025 World Championship, where he helped his country win a gold medal. He also won a gold medal at the 2024 World Juniors, recording seven goals and nine points.

O'Reilly is known for his defensive game, hockey IQ, and playmaking abilities. His two-way abilities and responsible play make him a valuable asset. He is also strong in the face-off circle and is expected to provide the Lightning with a right-handed option for taking draws.

The trade represents a strategic move for both the Oilers and the Lightning. The Oilers gain a highly skilled forward with the potential to make an immediate impact, while the Lightning acquire a defensively sound center with leadership qualities.
