The Montreal Canadiens have reportedly decided against pursuing veteran forward Evgeny Kuznetsov, ending weeks of speculation linking the two-time All-Star to the team. This news comes as the Canadiens continue their search for a second-line center. Despite the potential of pairing Kuznetsov with top prospect Ivan Demidov, the Canadiens apparently believe Kuznetsov is no longer capable of contributing effectively in a top-six role.

Kuznetsov's agent, Shumi Babaev, confirmed that Kuznetsov is not part of Montreal's plans, despite the player's desire to play in Montreal. Babaev stated, "Evgeny would be a good fit. He wants to play in Montreal, but there's no room. I don't think he'll get the chance". While Kuznetsov had a productive season in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg, scoring 12 goals and 37 points in 39 games, the Canadiens seem to be focusing on internal options and maintaining financial flexibility.

Meanwhile, in Edmonton, the Oilers' potential pursuit of goaltender Carter Hart appears to be cooling down. Initial reports suggested the Oilers might consider signing Hart, but speculation has quieted as Hart remains embroiled in the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal. Hart, along with several other members of the 2018 World Junior team, has been charged in connection with an alleged assault following a Hockey Canada gala. His trial verdict is expected on July 24, 2025.

Given the intense public scrutiny surrounding Hart, the Oilers' potential interest could ignite a major PR storm. Some believe that if Hart is found not guilty, the Oilers might still consider acquiring him, especially given their need for goaltending depth. However, the organization may prefer to start the season with their current tandem.

Beyond these specific situations, other NHL teams are also navigating the rumor mill. The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Ryan Reaves to the San Jose Sharks, freeing up cap space and potentially paving the way for another move. The Boston Bruins are reportedly planning a "big swing" in 2026, potentially targeting a major free agent. The Pittsburgh Penguins are receiving interest in forwards Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust, with GM Kyle Dubas open to moving pieces as part of the team's rebuild.
