Trinity Rodman marked her return to the pitch after a four-month absence with a dramatic stoppage-time winner for the Washington Spirit against the Portland Thorns on Sunday at Audi Field. The 23-year-old forward, who had been sidelined since April 12 due to a lingering back injury, entered the game in the 76th minute to a roaring crowd. Her goal in the 92nd minute secured a 2-1 victory for the Spirit and sparked an emotional celebration.

The Spirit initially took the lead thanks to Gift Monday, but Olivia Moultrie leveled the score for Portland just before halftime. With the score tied at 1-1, Rodman's introduction brought a spark to the Spirit's attack. A critical turnover by Courtney Brown on the left wing led to a cross into the box, which Croix Bethune redirected, finding Rodman unmarked at the back post. Rodman then unleashed a powerful half-volley into the net, sending the fans into a frenzy.

Rodman has been dealing with recurring back issues since her rookie season in 2021. After undergoing intensive rehabilitation during the offseason, her injury resurfaced after just four matches in 2025, forcing another extended break.

After the game, Rodman expressed her emotions, stating, "That was the hardest thing I've had to go through, with the injury and everything. Being back, especially at the home stadium, with the crowd behind me, scoring a goal like that… I'm just really happy to be back…". She also acknowledged the work her teammates had put in during her absence and expressed her gratitude for their support. "I'm so proud of the team. Obviously, I've been away, and they've been putting in that work when I haven't been here, so I'm just grateful to be back on the field with them. They're in full support of me. I'm in full support of them, and with the celebration, them, like, just hugging me was the best thing ever," Rodman said.

Rodman's goal was not only a triumphant return from injury but also a historic moment in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Opta reports that she is the first and only NWSL player to score three match-winning goals during stoppage time. The Washington Spirit winger is no stranger to health concerns with her back. Rodman has dealt with back tightness since her rookie season in 2021, and general flare-ups, but post the Olympic gold medal win, her back pain considerably worsened.

Her return also has implications for the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT). Rodman returned to the team earlier in the year and scored in a friendly win over Brazil in April.
