Son Heung-min is poised to make a significant move to Major League Soccer, with Los Angeles FC (LAFC) emerging as his likely destination. The South Korean star announced his departure from Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, stating his desire for a new challenge after a decade with the North London club.

LAFC are in advanced talks to sign Son, with reports suggesting that a verbal agreement has been reached between all parties. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham will receive over $17 million for the 33-year-old. The transfer fee could reach $27 million, potentially making Son the most expensive incoming MLS transfer, surpassing Atlanta United's $22 million purchase of Emmanuel Latte Lath. Even at $20 million, Son would still be the second most expensive, ahead of Kévin Denkey's $16.2 million move to FC Cincinnati.

Son's decision to leave Tottenham comes as he enters the final year of his contract, and it is understood that he doesn't feature as a guaranteed starter in the plans of new manager Thomas Frank. By moving to MLS, Son would be guaranteed a starting role, which is particularly important with the 2026 World Cup in North America on the horizon.

LAFC have been actively pursuing Son, with representatives reportedly sent to South Korea to engage in talks with the player and Tottenham. Son's last appearance for Tottenham was in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul. He bid an emotional farewell to teammates and fans after being substituted in the 65th minute.

Son is expected to be among the highest-paid players in MLS once he joins LAFC. He will be expected to quickly integrate into the team under head coach Steve Cherundolo, who is set to depart at the end of the 2025 season. LAFC currently sit sixth in the MLS Western Conference with 12 regular season games remaining. Their highest-paid player is Denis Bouanga, who earns $3,709,500 in guaranteed compensation.

During his ten years at Tottenham, Son scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists in 454 appearances. He helped the club win the 2024-25 Europa League title, their first trophy in 17 years. Son lifted the trophy after full-time in what was his last competitive game for the club.

Son's arrival would provide a significant boost to LAFC's attacking options. Despite being 33, Son would add considerable pace and dynamism to the team. The club has been looking to add speed to their squad, and Son fits the bill perfectly.

Son isn't the only high-profile player linked with a move to MLS. Vancouver Whitecaps are reportedly close to signing Thomas Müller from Bayern Munich. Inter Miami CF have completed the transfer of Rodrigo De Paul from Atlético Madrid.
