Australian cricket legend Glenn McGrath has ignited the Ashes rivalry with a bold prediction for the 2025-26 series, stating that Australia will win 5-0 against England. McGrath's comments, made on BBC Radio, have already added spice to the highly anticipated series, which begins in Perth on November 21.

McGrath, known for his accurate and sometimes overly optimistic predictions, didn't hold back in expressing his confidence in the Australian team. He believes that England will find it "pretty tough" to win a Test in Australia, citing the strength of Australia's bowling attack, led by Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon. McGrath suggests that this world-class bowling quartet will be too much for England's batting lineup to handle in home conditions. "It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it? And I can't make a different one – 5-0,” McGrath said. “Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test”.

McGrath also pointed to England's recent 2-2 draw in India during the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, highlighting perceived weaknesses in their batting. He emphasized that a key battle will be between Australia's bowlers and England's top and middle order, particularly Joe Root and Harry Brook. According to McGrath, this series will be significant for Root, who has never scored a century in Australia. He also noted Brook as a player he enjoys watching, adding that the Australians will need to get on top of him early.

England has struggled in the Ashes in recent years, not having won the series since 2015. Since 2002-03, they have suffered multiple heavy defeats in Australia, including 0-5 or 0-4 series losses. Their last Test win in Australia was in 2010-11, when they won the series 3-1. Australia won the last Ashes series Down Under in 2021-22 by 4-0.

While acknowledging that Australia's top order has its own issues, McGrath believes that England's bowling lacks the necessary firepower to challenge the hosts. He stated that England's bowling needs to strengthen to compete effectively over the five-match series.

McGrath's comments have sparked debate and discussion among cricket fans and experts. Some believe that his prediction is overly optimistic, while others agree with his assessment of Australia's strength and England's weaknesses. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has urged the 'Three Lions' to bat big and score 400 or 450 runs against the 'Baggy Greens', while also cautioning them against a careless approach against Australia’s potent attack.

Despite the challenges, England will be determined to defy McGrath's prediction and compete strongly in the upcoming Ashes series. They will be hoping that their key players can perform at their best and that their bowling attack can rise to the occasion. The series promises to be a thrilling contest, with both teams battling for the prestigious urn.
