Recent reports have ignited speculation about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day International (ODI) cricket, but sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suggest that no immediate decisions are planned regarding their potential retirement. The board is reportedly focused on upcoming tournaments, particularly the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup, and is not presently concerned with the long-term ODI plans of these two veteran players.

Fueled by a report in Dainik Jagran, the rumors suggested that Kohli and Rohit might retire from ODIs following the tour of Australia in October 2025. To prolong their careers until the 2027 ODI World Cup, the report stated they would need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's domestic List A tournament, to prove their fitness and be considered for selection. This condition, it was implied, might lead them to consider retirement.

However, a BCCI source, speaking anonymously to PTI, dismissed these speculations. The source indicated that the board is primarily focused on the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. Any decision regarding Kohli and Rohit's future would not be rushed, especially considering their massive fan base. The source also refuted claims that the BCCI had offered them a farewell match in Sydney.

Adding to the discussion, former India captain Sourav Ganguly acknowledged the rumors but emphasized that performance should be the primary factor determining a player's career length.

While both Kohli and Rohit have already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, ODIs remain their last active format in international cricket. To be considered for future ODI selections, the BCCI selection panel has reportedly conveyed that both Kohli and Rohit must participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic one-day tournament. This move aims to ensure the players maintain match fitness, form, and competitive sharpness through regular cricket rather than relying solely on international appearances.

The upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia, scheduled from October 19 to 25, 2025, is being viewed by many as a potential farewell tour for the duo. If they choose not to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, their appearances in that series could well be their last in Indian ODI colors.

The selectors are reportedly shifting their focus towards younger talents, keeping the next World Cup cycle in mind.

Kohli and Rohit last played for India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where India won the title. Neither has played competitive cricket since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League.
