Caitlin Clark's arrival in the WNBA has been nothing short of a seismic event, drawing unprecedented attention to the league and sparking a surge in popularity for women's basketball. However, her presence and recent injury have inadvertently created a unique opportunity for her Indiana Fever teammate, Kelsey Mitchell, to shine. While the spotlight has been largely focused on Clark, Mitchell, a seasoned veteran, is stepping up and demonstrating her leadership and scoring prowess, proving to be a vital asset for the Fever.

Mitchell's journey with the Fever has been one of consistent growth and dedication. Drafted second overall in 2018, she has steadily improved her game, culminating in a career-high average of 19.9 points per game this season. As the highest-paid player on the Fever, with a base salary of $249,244, Mitchell has long been a key contributor. Yet, with the arrival of Clark and Aliyah Boston, Mitchell's role has evolved, and she's had to adapt to a shifting team dynamic.

Clark's absence due to a lingering groin injury has thrust Mitchell into a more prominent leadership role. With Clark sidelined for 11 straight games and no firm return date in sight, Mitchell has embraced the challenge, particularly after the Fever lost backup point guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson to season-ending injuries. Coach Stephanie White has acknowledged the need for a "by committee" approach in Clark's absence, and Mitchell has been central to that strategy.

In fact, Tony East, on the "Locked On Basketball Podcast," suggested earlier in the season that the Fever should utilize Mitchell at point guard more often, even before the injury crisis. East noted Mitchell's synergy with Boston and her capabilities as a ball handler. Mitchell's flexibility has been evident throughout her WNBA career, having played behind Erica Wheeler in 2022 and as a primary ball-handler at times in 2023. Her assist numbers in those seasons were among her career highs, showcasing her ability to distribute the ball effectively.

Mitchell's recent performances underscore her value to the Fever. On August 10, 2025, she surpassed Napheesa Collier for the most total points scored this season, amassing 637 points after dropping 26 points on the Chicago Sky. The Fever have also found a way to remain competitive, holding an 18-14 record in the Eastern Conference despite Clark's absence. This success is largely attributed to strong performances from Mitchell, Boston, and Sophie Cunningham.

Candace Parker, WNBA legend and Fever star Aliyah Boston's podcast co-host on "Post Moves," noted that Clark's eventual return, combined with Mitchell and Boston's current form, will make the Fever a "scary" team. She praised the playmaking abilities of both Mitchell and Clark, as well as Boston's presence in the post.

While Clark's injury has undoubtedly been a setback for the Fever, it has simultaneously provided an opportunity for Mitchell to demonstrate her leadership, scoring ability, and overall importance to the team. As the Fever navigates the season without their star rookie, Mitchell's elevated role is proving to be a blessing in disguise, showcasing her talent and solidifying her position as a cornerstone of the franchise.
