Draisaitl's Brief Take on McDavid's Contract Talks: Oilers Focused on Winning, Not Just One Player's Deal.

As the Edmonton Oilers gear up for the 2025-26 NHL season, the spotlight is firmly fixed on Connor McDavid's contract situation. With the superstar captain eligible to sign an extension since July 1, the hockey world is abuzz with speculation surrounding his future in Edmonton. Amidst this whirlwind, teammate Leon Draisaitl offered a concise perspective on the matter.

Draisaitl, fresh off his own eight-year, $112 million contract extension signed last year, faced a barrage of questions about McDavid's contract during informal skates. In response, Draisaitl stated, "Not really for me to comment on". While brief, this sound bite encapsulates the Oilers' approach to McDavid's negotiations: a respectful distance and a focus on the present.

Despite his reluctance to delve into the specifics, Draisaitl made his desires clear: "Of course, I want him here as long as possible. I want to win with him". He also acknowledged the personal nature of McDavid's decision, emphasizing that "It's about him and his family, and they're going to make their decision based on what's best for them". Draisaitl further added, "I know he loves it here, I know he feels at home here, but there's a lot of things that play into a decision like that. So hopefully something gets reported soon".

McDavid's current eight-year, $100 million contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the upcoming season. His accomplishments are undeniable as he tallied 100 points in just 67 games last season, marking his eighth 100-point season in the league. He also added 33 points in 22 playoff games. At the recent Hockey Canada Olympic orientation camp, McDavid expressed his "every intention to win in Edmonton," signaling his commitment to the Oilers.

Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson is directly involved in the contract extension negotiations. He noted that while Leon Draisaitl's $112 million contract demonstrates McDavid's value as a teammate, the team isn't directly comparing the two players' worth in negotiations. Jackson has emphasized that McDavid isn't solely driven by financial gain but seeks a balance between fair compensation and the team's ability to maintain a competitive roster.

The Oilers have a solid core of players locked into long-term contracts, including Draisaitl, Darnell Nurse, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Evan Bouchard, and Zach Hyman. This stability provides a foundation for continued success and could factor into McDavid's decision.

As the Oilers prepare for the new season, the focus remains on building upon their recent achievements. "It starts from zero," Draisaitl said. "Every team is different, and you've got to build it again". With training camp approaching, the organization hopes to resolve McDavid's contract situation before the season begins. However, both sides are committed to a thorough process, ensuring McDavid feels comfortable with the terms and the Oilers maintain their competitive edge.
