Shubman Gill is reportedly set to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian ODI team for the upcoming series against Australia, marking a significant transition in Indian cricket leadership. The selection meeting, led by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, took place on Saturday in Ahmedabad.
Gill, who also captains the Test team, will potentially lead the ODI side with an eye toward the 2027 World Cup. Selectors have reportedly communicated with Gill about their long-term vision for him as captain. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to be part of the ODI squad as specialist batsmen, having retired from T20Is and Tests.
The ODI squad includes Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the T20I squad. The T20I squad includes Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill (VC), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (WK), Rinku Singh, and Washington Sundar.
The decision to appoint Gill as ODI captain signals a strategic move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to foster stable leadership for the future. At 26, Gill is more than a decade younger than the 38-year-old Rohit Sharma, indicating a significant change of guard.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be making a comeback to the national team after a long break. Their last appearance was at the Champions Trophy 2025 final. While there were questions about Rohit's captaincy for the ODI series, both players are expected to contribute as experienced batsmen.
Hardik Pandya will be absent from the Australian tour due to a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2025. Rishabh Pant is also expected to miss the tour as he recovers from a foot fracture.
India and Australia will play three ODIs, starting on October 19 in Perth, followed by matches in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25. This will be followed by five T20Is.
