Singapore, October 4, 2025 – Williams Racing is reeling after a disastrous qualifying session at the Singapore Grand Prix, with both cars disqualified due to a technical infringement. Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz Jr., who had initially qualified in 12th and 13th positions respectively, will now start the race from the back of the grid.

The issue arose during post-qualifying scrutineering when FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer discovered that the rear wings on both FW47 cars did not comply with Article 3.10.10g of the technical regulations. Specifically, the uppermost rear wing element adjustable positions, when the Drag Reduction System (DRS) was deployed, exceeded the maximum limit of 85mm on both sides of the rear wing outer area.

The team acknowledged the breach and did not contest the FIA's measurements. Williams admitted that their own pre-qualifying checks had indicated the component was within tolerance. However, they accepted that the FIA's measurement was the only one that mattered.

Team boss James Vowles expressed his disappointment and confirmed the immediate launch of an internal investigation. "This is bitterly disappointing for the team and we are urgently investigating how this happened," Vowles stated. "At no point were we seeking a performance advantage and the rear wings had passed our own checks earlier in the day, but there is only one measurement that matters and we fully accept the FIA ruling."

Vowles added that the team would "immediately review our processes to make sure this doesn't happen again." Despite the setback, he remained optimistic about the race, saying, "We have a car capable of scoring points here this weekend and will do everything we can to fight from the back of the grid tomorrow."

The disqualification is a significant blow for Williams, especially in light of Carlos Sainz Jr.'s recent podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team's first in four years. Sainz had also shown promising pace in practice sessions in Singapore, raising hopes for another strong result.

The incident highlights the critical importance of adhering to the strict technical regulations of Formula 1 and the potential consequences of even minor discrepancies. Williams will be looking to understand how their internal measurements differed from the FIA's and to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.

With the cars starting from the rear of the grid, the Singapore Grand Prix presents a formidable challenge for the team. Albon and Sainz will need to rely on a strong race strategy, favorable safety car periods, and their overtaking skills to salvage any points from the race.

Meanwhile, George Russell secured pole position for Mercedes, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull alongside him on the front row, and Oscar Piastri of McLaren in third.
