Buffalo, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Saturday, handing the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions their fourth straight loss. Josh Doan scored his first two NHL goals for the Sabres, both on the power play, while goaltender Alex Lyon earned a 32-save shutout against his former team.
The Sabres, now 2-3-0 on the season, followed up Wednesday night's 8-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators with another strong performance. After losing their first three games, this marks their second consecutive win. The Panthers, after starting the season with three straight wins, are now on a four-game losing streak, the longest active skid in the Eastern Conference. During this losing streak, Florida has struggled to score, managing only four goals.
Doan, acquired by Buffalo in a June trade with Utah, opened the scoring at 7:13 of the first period. Tage Thompson's shot deflected off Doan's leg and past Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Doan's second goal came at 11:12 of the second period, assisted by Jason Zucker. Owen Power also scored for Buffalo at 14:20 of the second period, marking his first goal of the season.
Lyon, who played a key role for the Panthers during their 2023 Stanley Cup Final run, recorded his first shutout since October 22, 2024, when he played for Detroit against the New York Islanders. He is now 2-1-2 against the Panthers. Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots for Florida.
The Sabres' penalty kill was also a significant factor in the game, successfully killing off all seven Panthers power plays. Buffalo had only allowed one power-play goal in 16 attempts prior to this game.
The Panthers were without key players Matthew Tkachuk, Aleksander Barkov, and Dmitry Kulikov due to injuries. Defenseman Niko Mikkola left the game in the second period with an upper-body injury. Sabres defenseman Jacob Bryson was also sidelined with an injury in the first period.
The Panthers continue their five-game road trip on Tuesday in Boston against the Bruins. The Sabres will face the Canadiens in Montreal on Monday.
