LIV Golf Seeks World Ranking Points: Considering 72-Hole Tournaments to Boost Credibility and Recognition.

LIV Golf is set to expand its tournament format to 72 holes beginning in the 2026 season, a significant shift from its original 54-hole structure. This move is widely seen as a strategic effort to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Since its inception, LIV Golf has operated with a three-day, 54-hole format, a characteristic so central to its identity that it's reflected in the league's name, the Roman numeral for 54.

The decision to adopt a 72-hole format aligns LIV Golf more closely with the established norms of professional golf, as most major tours adhere to a four-day structure. While the OWGR has not explicitly stated that 54 holes was a deal-breaker, the move addresses a key difference between LIV and other recognized tours.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil stated that the change marks a "pivotal new chapter" for the league, strengthening its structure and challenging its players. He added that the league is focused on progress that benefits both LIV Golf and the sport in general. According to O'Neil, the most successful leagues in the world are constantly innovating and evolving, and LIV Golf is no different.

The new format will maintain the concurrent team competition, with all players' scores contributing to the team total each day. Most events will now commence on Thursdays, with 18 holes played each day. It remains unclear whether LIV Golf will incorporate a 36-hole cut, though it is considered unlikely given the team format and the league's limited field, which consists of 54 players.

Several prominent LIV Golf players have voiced their support for the change. Jon Rahm, a two-time major winner, has been advocating for 72-hole events since joining the league in 2024. Rahm believes that the move is a win for the league and its players, providing them with more opportunities to compete at the highest level. Bryson DeChambeau, another major champion, emphasized that playing 72 holes is a proactive step toward aligning with the globally recognized historic format. He believes that it is a fantastic evolution that demonstrates the league's ability to listen and adapt.

In addition to extending its tournament format, LIV Golf is also increasing the pathways for players to qualify for the league. The league will now take the leading two available players from the International Series ranking on the Asian Tour, as well as two players from a qualifying tournament held in January. LIV Golf Promotions is scheduled for January 8-11 at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida.

The changes come as LIV Golf seeks recognition from the OWGR, which would allow its players to earn world ranking points and improve their chances of qualifying for major championships. LIV resubmitted its application to the OWGR in July, under the leadership of its new CEO, Scott O'Neil.
