Edmonton Oilers Coaching Greats: A Ranking of the Top 5 Bench Bosses in Franchise History

The Edmonton Oilers have a rich history, marked by periods of unparalleled success and challenging rebuilds. Throughout their journey, the guidance of impactful coaches has been crucial. Here's a look at the top 5 coaches who have left an indelible mark on the franchise:

1. Glen Sather: Glen Sather is almost inarguably the most beloved Oilers coach in franchise history. Sather's reign from 1977 to 1989 saw the Oilers transition from the WHA to the NHL and become a dynasty. He led the team to their first-ever playoff appearance in 1979 and helped lay the foundation for the dynasty years that were to come. Under his leadership, the Oilers won four Stanley Cups in five seasons between 1983 and 1988. Sather also served as the team's general manager from 1980 to 2000. In the 1985–86 NHL season, Sather won the Jack Adams Award for the NHL coach "adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success". His vision, patience, and belief in his players were instrumental to the team's success. Sather coached the Oilers for 842 regular games and 126 playoff games in the NHL.

2. John Muckler: John Muckler took over from Sather and coached the 1990 championship team. Muckler is the only other Oilers head coach to win a Stanley Cup championship.

3. Craig MacTavish: Craig MacTavish served as head coach from 2000 to 2009. MacTavish won three Stanley Cups as a player with the Oilers. As head coach, he guided the team to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2006, where they lost to the Carolina Hurricanes. MacTavish knew how to motivate his team and push the right buttons at the right time with his roster over the years. He led the team to the playoffs four times during his tenure. He was also instrumental in developing young talents such as Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff.

4. Kris Knoblauch: On July 14, 2025, the Edmonton Oilers made an announcement about major changes to their coaching staff. Woodcroft was fired as Oilers coach and replaced by Knoblauch.

5. Ron Low: Ron Low was head coach from 1996-1999. Low is one of the longest serving coaches for the Oilers.

Honorable Mentions: Other coaches who deserve recognition include Ted Green, Kevin Lowe, Todd McLellan, and potentially Jay Woodcroft and Ken Hitchcock.
