Matheus Cunha's Absence: Manchester United Squad Omission Follows Missed Christmas Lights Event.

Manchester United will face Everton tonight without Matheus Cunha, who is absent from the squad after picking up a knock during training. The Brazilian forward was initially scheduled to participate in Altrincham's "Neon Noel" Christmas lights switch-on event on Saturday but had to withdraw due to the injury.

The news of Cunha's injury was first revealed by Visit Altrincham, who announced on social media that the player would be unable to attend the Christmas lights event due to medical reasons following a training accident. The announcement triggered concern among Manchester United fans regarding the player's availability for the Everton match.

It has been confirmed by BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone that Cunha suffered a head injury during training. While the club has not released an official statement regarding the specifics of the injury, sources within the club have indicated that it is considered a minor issue.

Cunha's absence will be a blow for United, as the 26-year-old had made an impressive start to the season after joining from Wolves in the summer. He has quickly established himself as a key player in Ruben Amorim's squad.

In addition to Cunha, Manchester United is already missing several key players due to injury, including Benjamin Sesko, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Martinez. Kobbie Mainoo was also a doubt for the game. However, there is some positive news for United fans as Lisandro Martinez has made the matchday squad for the first time in nine months after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Kobbie Mainoo has also returned to the bench after missing the previous game.

With Cunha ruled out, Joshua Zirkzee has been given a starting opportunity. Zirkzee will be looking to impress and prove his worth to the manager.

Despite Cunha's absence, the Christmas lights switch-on in Altrincham went ahead as planned. Sam Aston, who plays Chesney in Coronation Street and won Dancing on Ice in 2025, participated in the event. Hundreds of fans attended the event, despite the late change in the lineup.
