Tokyo, Japan – India concluded its shooting campaign at the 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo with a remarkable performance, amassing a total of 16 medals. This stellar performance firmly establishes India's dominance in the sport at this year's Games. The medal haul includes seven gold, six silver, and three bronze medals, a testament to the skill and dedication of the Indian shooting contingent.
The Deaflympics, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is being held in Tokyo from November 15 to 26. This marks the first time Japan has hosted the Summer Deaflympics. India has been participating in the Deaflympics since 1965.
India's shooting team made an impressive start to the competition, with Dhanush Srikanth leading the charge by defending his men's 10m air rifle title with a world record score of 252.2. Mohammad Vania secured the silver in the same event, setting the stage for India's continued success. Mahit Sandhu and Komal Waghmare added to the medal tally by winning silver and bronze, respectively, in the women's 10m air rifle event. Anuya Prasad further solidified India's position by setting a new world record in the women's 10m air pistol event.
Adding to India's gold rush, Abhinav Deshwal clinched gold in the men's 25m pistol event, equaling the world and Deaflympic record in the qualification round. Pranjali Dhumal mirrored this achievement in the women's 25m pistol event, securing another gold for India. Dhumal's gold was her second of the Games, having previously won gold in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event with Abhinav Deshwal. She also secured a silver medal in the women's 10m air pistol event, making her one of India's most successful athletes at the Games.
Other notable performances include Shourya Saini's silver in the 50m 3Positions event and Kushagra Singh Rajawat's bronze in the 50m Rifle Prone event. Chetan Hanmant Sapkal finished sixth in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event.
Mahit Sandhu emerged as the most successful shooter for India, securing a total of four medals, including two gold and two silver. Abhinav Deshwal and Pranjali Prashant Dhumal each won two gold medals and one silver medal. Dhanush Srikanth secured two gold medals in the 10m Air Rifle individual and mixed team events.
With this performance, India has surpassed its previous best showing at the Deaflympics, which was 16 medals (eight gold, one silver, and seven bronze) achieved at the Caxias do Sul Games in Brazil in 2022. As of November 24, 2025, India holds the sixth position in the medal table. The shooting events featured a total of 39 medals, with Indian shooters claiming 16 of them.
The Indian contingent in Tokyo comprises 73 athletes competing across 11 sports. Loma Swain also secured India's first-ever Deaflympics medal in Karate, winning a bronze in the Women's Kumite -50 kg category.
