Avalanche's Brent Burns Finding His Stride During Winning Streak
The Colorado Avalanche are currently enjoying a stellar run, and a significant contributor to their success has been veteran defenseman Brent Burns. The 40-year-old, in his 22nd NHL season, is proving to be a valuable addition to the team, bringing experience, leadership, and a spark of levity to the locker room.
Burns signed a one-year contract with the Avalanche on July 2, 2025. In 21 appearances with the team, Burns has tallied 11 points, including two goals and nine assists. Beyond the scoresheet, Burns's impact is felt in his consistent play and ability to keep the mood light, which has helped the Avalanche get off to a fast start. His veteran presence is invaluable to a team with high aspirations, as noted by center Nathan MacKinnon.
"The fire is still there," MacKinnon said. "You'd never know he's 40. He still wants to get better. He's super interesting, he loves to talk about different things. A lot of guys are sick of it by 40, and I don't know how long he's going to play, but it seems like he's got lots left in the tank".
Burns's journey to the Avalanche began after spending three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. Before that, he had notable stints with the San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota Wild, who drafted him as a right wing in 2003. Throughout his career, Burns has been recognized for his dynamic offensive capabilities and has been utilized as a forward on several occasions, despite primarily playing defense. His versatility and adaptability have made him a valuable asset to every team he's played for.
Burns's influence extends beyond his on-ice performance. He brings a unique personality to the Avalanche, keeping things light and relieving tension. This is particularly important during a season with high expectations, where pressure can mount.
Coach Jared Bednar acknowledged Burns's positive impact, stating that his ability to keep things light helps the team. "It helps," Bednar said. "Winning also keeps the mood light. Burns is doing his part in there too".
Burns himself emphasizes the importance of enjoying the game. "I grew up in a hockey family; my dad loved the game for a long time and we did a lot of family things around the game, and I just love it," said Burns. "I love being around the guys and having so many good laughs every day and just the whole process. I love morning skates and working out and having fun with the guys".
The Avalanche are currently riding a nine-game winning streak, demonstrating their readiness for the playoffs. During this stretch, the team has showcased its offensive prowess, averaging 5.1 goals per game over their last 10 games. Defensively, they've been equally impressive, allowing just 2.4 goals per game during the same period.
Burns's presence on the ice has been a key factor in the Avalanche's success. He is averaging just over 20 minutes of ice time per game and contributing on both the penalty kill and the power play. While his offensive numbers may not be as high as in his prime, his experience and hockey sense make him a reliable presence in all situations.
As the Avalanche continue their quest for the Stanley Cup, Brent Burns's contributions will be crucial. His ability to blend skill, experience, and a positive attitude makes him an invaluable asset to a team with championship aspirations.
