The Lionesses squad is reportedly united amidst the controversy surrounding Mary Earps' comments about Hannah Hampton, according to winger Lauren Hemp. The controversy stems from Earps' autobiography, All In, where she detailed her reservations about Hampton's return to the England squad.
In her book, Earps claimed she told England head coach Sarina Wiegman that she felt "bad behaviour is being rewarded" by reintegrating Hampton into the Lionesses squad. Earps says Hampton's “behaviour behind the scenes had frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources” during England's triumph on home soil at Euro 2022. She also revealed that Wiegman's decision to reinstate Hampton in April 2024, for a Euro 2025 qualifying match against Sweden, did not sit well with her. Earps retired from international football earlier this year ahead of Euro 2025, with Hampton replacing her as England's No 1. Hampton then played every minute at this summer's tournament where she played a starring role.
Hemp's statement suggests an attempt to diffuse the situation and present a united front within the team. While Hemp acknowledged the tensions arising from the situation, she conveyed that the team remains focused on their goals and supportive of both goalkeepers. Hemp described both goalkeepers in her statement.
Earps' comments have sparked debate within the football community, with some figures like Fara Williams accusing the former Lionesses No.1 of disrespecting her teammate and manager. Williams found it "baffling" that Earps would publicly talk about a teammate. She also stated that Wiegman even discussing her intention to bring Hampton back to the England squad following a brief spell out of favour was more than she ever got from a manager.
The situation highlights the complexities of team dynamics and the challenges of managing player relationships, especially in high-pressure environments. It also raises questions about the handling of disciplinary issues within the squad and the balance between rewarding talent and upholding team standards.
Despite the controversy, Hampton has continued to perform well for the Lionesses, playing a key role in their recent successes. Her performance during the summer's Euros, where she saved two penalties in the final shoot-out against Spain, has further solidified her position as a key player. Wiegman even launched an attempt to reverse Earps' retirement decision.
The Lionesses are now looking to move forward and focus on their upcoming challenges, aiming to maintain their position as one of the top teams in women's football.
