Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has ignited a fresh debate surrounding workload management in cricket, specifically concerning star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. In a recent conversation with AB de Villiers on YouTube, Ashwin suggested that Bumrah should prioritize white-ball formats and only feature in Test matches when absolutely necessary.
Ashwin's comments come amidst growing concerns about Bumrah's workload, especially after the premier speedster featured in several international assignments this year, including the Asia Cup, two Tests against the West Indies, five T20Is against Australia, and two Tests against South Africa. He notably skipped the ODIs against South Africa but is slated to participate in the upcoming five-match T20I series against the Proteas starting December 9.
"I've got a great relationship with him. If I were anywhere near him, I'd go and tell him, you know what, just play the white ball format. Unless and until we need you, do not step into the Test side. And that's what I would tell him," Ashwin stated, acknowledging Bumrah's love for the Test format and the challenges it presents.
Bumrah, 31, has been a vital component of the Indian team across all formats since his international debut in 2016. Widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers globally, he has consistently delivered match-winning performances. However, his career has also been punctuated by injuries, including a back spasm that sidelined him during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia earlier this year.
The Indian team management has been particularly cautious about managing Bumrah's workload since that injury. He has also served as the vice-captain of the Test team and has even captained the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma. In February 2024, Bumrah achieved the number one ranking in the ICC Test bowling rankings for the first time, becoming the first bowler to hold the top spot in all three formats.
Ashwin's suggestion has expectedly stirred the workload debate. Some experts believe that limiting Bumrah's Test appearances could prolong his career and ensure his availability for crucial white-ball tournaments. Others argue that Bumrah's impact in Test cricket is invaluable, citing his exceptional record in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries.
Historically, Bumrah has defied criticism and injuries to maintain a high level of performance. Despite setbacks, he has consistently bounced back, proving his resilience and dedication to the sport. In July 2025, he also achieved a milestone against England at Lord's, registering his 13th Test five-wicket haul away from home, surpassing Kapil Dev's previous record.
Ultimately, the decision regarding Bumrah's workload rests with the team management and the player himself. It requires balancing his desire to play all formats with the need to preserve his fitness and ensure his longevity in international cricket. As the debate continues, the focus remains on finding a sustainable approach that maximizes Bumrah's potential while safeguarding his well-being.
