Montreal Extends Mike Matheson's Contract
In a move to solidify their defensive core, the Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year contract extension. The deal, announced Friday, carries an average annual value of $6 million, totaling $30 million over the life of the contract. The extension will keep the 31-year-old Matheson in Montreal through the 2030-31 season.
Matheson is currently in his fourth season with the Canadiens. So far this season, he has recorded 4 goals and 10 assists in 22 games. His average ice time of 24:50 per game leads the team and ranks 10th in the NHL. He also has a team-leading plus-minus differential of +13.
Acquired by the Canadiens in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 16, 2022, Matheson has become a key contributor to the team's blue line. Last season, he set career highs in assists (51), points (62), power-play goals (5), and power-play points (28). He also matched his personal best with 11 goals. Matheson's offensive contributions and strong defensive play have made him a valuable asset for Montreal.
"Mike has quickly become an important part of our team, " said Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes in a statement. "His leadership qualities, offensive skills, and commitment to the game are all assets that we value highly. This extension reflects our confidence in his ability to continue to contribute to our team's success."
Matheson, a native of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, was originally drafted 23rd overall by the Florida Panthers in 2012. Throughout his NHL career with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Florida Panthers, Matheson has played 649 games, recording 78 goals and 279 points.
With this contract extension, Matheson becomes the fourth Canadiens defenseman signed through at least the 2030-31 season, joining Kaiden Guhle, Noah Dobson, and Lane Hutson. This move signals the Canadiens' commitment to building a strong and stable defensive foundation for the future.
