Fabian Lysell's Impressive Performance Suggests He's Ready for an NHL Opportunity Very Soon.

The Boston Bruins may soon be calling up one of their top prospects, Fabian Lysell, from the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 22-year-old winger has been displaying his skills in the AHL, making a strong case for a return to the NHL.

Lysell's journey has had its ups and downs this season, facing struggles and injuries, but he has recently found his stride. His improved performance was highlighted by a spectacular goal in a recent win against the Toronto Marlies. The Providence Bruins even posted the goal on Twitter, calling it a potential "Goal of the Year" candidate.

Lysell was drafted 21st overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, and now the time may be right for him to receive another NHL opportunity. An injury to Matej Blümel during a game against the New York Islanders has created an opening in the Bruins' forward lineup. Bruins coach Marco Sturm indicated that Blümel will be sidelined for an unspecified period. With Blümel's absence, the Bruins may look to Providence for a replacement.

While other prospects like Georgii Merkulov are also in consideration, Lysell's recent play has made him a leading candidate for a call-up. Some observers feel that Blümel has not demonstrated enough to justify his spot on the Bruins' roster, especially when compared to the potential that Lysell and Matthew Poitras offer.

Lysell made his NHL debut on December 28, 2024. Although he didn't score, he showcased his speed. He was sent back to Providence the next day. On March 18, he was recalled on an emergency basis for a West Coast road trip. In a game against the San Jose Sharks during that stretch, he recorded three shots on goal. However, he has, at times, struggled with defensive miscues.

The Bruins have two upcoming home games against Eastern Conference playoff contenders, the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Calling up Lysell could provide a spark as the team battles for crucial points.

To secure a permanent position in the NHL, Lysell needs to further develop his overall game. While his offensive skills are evident, he needs to improve his physicality and defensive responsibility. Coach Marco Sturm's system emphasizes speed and a straightforward offensive approach, which could benefit Lysell if he continues to adapt.

Lysell has played 12 NHL games and recorded three points. While those numbers aren't overwhelming, he has shown flashes of the talent that made him a first-round pick. With an injury creating an opportunity, Fabian Lysell may soon get another chance to prove he belongs in the NHL.
