Blue Jackets Suffer Overtime Defeat Against Penguins After Surrendering a Three-Goal Lead.

The Columbus Blue Jackets suffered a painful 4-3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at Nationwide Arena after relinquishing a lead. The Blue Jackets have now gone to overtime in eight of their last 11 games and are 4-2-5 in their last 11 games.

Sidney Crosby led the charge for the Penguins, scoring two goals. Kris Letang sealed the victory with a goal just 58 seconds into overtime, firing a snap shot past Blue Jackets' goaltender Jet Greaves. Tommy Novak contributed with two assists, including the setup for Letang's game-winner. Bryan Rust also found the back of the net for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry recorded 26 saves in the victory.

The Blue Jackets saw goals from Sean Monahan, Brendan Gaunce, and Zach Werenski. Werenski also added an assist to his score. Goaltender Jet Greaves stopped 20 shots.

The game was a back-and-forth affair. Crosby opened the scoring for the Penguins 6:10 into the first period. Monahan then tied the score for the Blue Jackets, converting a rebound at 13:40. In the second period, Gaunce scored a short-handed goal at 3:51 to give Columbus the lead. Werenski then extended the lead with a goal at 19:56 of the second period. Crosby tied the game at 3-3 at 8:28 of the third period. Letang's quick overtime goal then sealed the win for Pittsburgh.

With his two goals, Crosby reached 640 career goals, tying him with Dave Andreychuk for 15th place on the NHL's all-time list. It was also Crosby's 109th career multi-goal game, tying Jarome Iginla for 20th. Letang's overtime goal was the 12th of his career, tying him with Erik Karlsson and Seth Jones for third-most among defensemen in NHL history.

The Blue Jackets will look to rebound as they host the New Jersey Devils on Monday. The Penguins will host Toronto on Saturday.
