The Utah Mammoth fell to the Dallas Stars by a score of 4-3 on Friday night, in a tightly contested and emotional game. Here are three takeaways from the game:
1. Special Teams Prove Costly:
The Mammoth's penalty kill, usually a strong point, faltered, surrendering two crucial power-play goals to the Stars. Wyatt Johnston's power-play goal ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Johnston's goal came 28 seconds into a 5-on-3 opportunity for Dallas. Utah, on the other hand, failed to capitalize on their own power-play chances, going 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Coach Andre Tourigny noted after the game that losing the game on special teams was especially disappointing considering how strong the penalty kill has been for the team this season.
2. Oettinger Shines, Cooley and Rooney Provide Spark:
Stars' goaltender Jake Oettinger was a key factor in the victory, stopping 27 of 30 shots. With the victory, Oettinger tied Ed Belfour for the third-most wins in franchise history, with 160. For the Mammoth, Logan Cooley continued his strong play, scoring a goal just 57 seconds into the game. Kevin Rooney, recalled from the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, also contributed offensively with his first goal of the season. Rooney was filling in for Barrett Hayton, who was out due to illness.
3. Stars Extend Winning Streak Amidst Milestone Night:
The Stars extended their winning streak to three games and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games. The Stars also revealed their new jerseys, an ode to the 1999 Stanley Cup team. In addition to Oettinger tying a franchise record, veteran defenseman Miro Heiskanen played in his 500th NHL game, contributing two assists in the win. Roope Hintz also continued his strong play, scoring for the Stars and matching a career high by scoring in his fourth straight game.
The Mammoth will look to bounce back on Saturday night as they continue their six-game road trip against the St. Louis Blues. The Stars will host the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night.
