Mhatre’s Mayhem and Samson Trade: CSK Fix Top-Order Concerns Before IPL Auction 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are making headlines ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, with a strategic trade and the continued rise of a young batting sensation signaling a proactive approach to solidifying their top order. Meanwhile, the emergence of Ayush Mhatre has further boosted CSK's top-order prospects. The 18-year-old Mumbai batsman recently broke a record held by Rohit Sharma, becoming the youngest player to score centuries in all three formats of professional cricket. Mhatre achieved this feat with a blistering 49-ball century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) against Vidarbha, smashing 110 runs off 53 balls, including eight fours and eight sixes.
Mhatre's impressive performance in the SMAT 2025 follows a promising IPL 2025 season where he scored 240 runs in 7 games for CSK at a strike rate of nearly 190. He was retained by CSK for the upcoming season. His aggressive batting style and ability to provide quick starts make him a valuable asset at the top of the order.
Mhatre’s recent form has also earned him the captaincy of the India U19 team for the upcoming Asia Cup. "I am very fortunate that I ended up in one of the biggest franchises in IPL history. I am very happy that things have turned out this way," Samson said in an interview.
The strategic acquisition of Samson and the emergence of Mhatre provide CSK with exciting options for their top order. While Samson brings experience and leadership, Mhatre offers youthful exuberance and explosive batting.
