Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has expressed patience and confidence in Trent Alexander-Arnold's ongoing adaptation to the team, following his high-profile summer move from Liverpool. The 27-year-old defender's start to life in the Spanish capital has been somewhat fragmented, marked by a hamstring injury and competition for a starting place with veteran Dani Carvajal.
Alexander-Arnold, who spent over two decades with Liverpool, has only recently begun to secure regular minutes for Los Blancos. After recovering from his injury, he played 90 minutes against Elche in La Liga and also featured for the entirety of the Champions League match against Olympiacos.
Alonso acknowledged the adaptation period required for a player making such a significant change in his career. "I think we will see a better Trent," Alonso stated in a press conference on Saturday ahead of Madrid's LaLiga clash with Girona. "Without doubt, it's positive after the injury, he could do 90 minutes against Elche, 90 against Olympiacos."
The Real Madrid boss emphasized the importance of Alexander-Arnold to the team's ambitions. "We need him. It's his first year, and it's normal to have this adaptation period," Alonso added. He also noted that Alexander-Arnold is beginning to feel more like himself, indicating a positive trajectory in his integration. "He's starting to feel (like) himself," continued Alonso. "He is demanding too; he plays at a top, top level. We have to be there for him, in this change that is so big for him, but it's good news."
Despite a few struggles in the 2-2 draw against Elche, Alexander-Arnold delivered an improved performance in the 4-3 victory over Olympiacos. In the game against Elche, TAA created four chances, had 91 touches, and hit the woodwork. Against Olympiacos, he completed all 7 of his long ball attempts and demonstrated defensive capabilities by winning 2/2 tackles, making one clearance and blocking three shots.
Notably, Madrid fans have lauded Alexander-Arnold's display against Olympiacos, with some suggesting that he remains one of the best full-backs in Europe. One fan highlighted his playmaking abilities, noting his accuracy on long-ball attempts and his passing in the opposition's half.
Alonso also lauded Jude Bellingham, another England international, for his impressive form. "I have very good communication with Jude, a very good relationship," said Alonso. "He's a top world-class star, but he has this desire to improve, to learn, to be more efficient with the big potential he's got."
With key players returning from injury, including Franco Mastantuono, Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao, Alonso looks to build momentum as his team faces Girona. The manager's focus remains on fostering a supportive environment for new arrivals like Alexander-Arnold, allowing them time to adjust and showcase their abilities within the team.
