Thomas Frank, the Tottenham Hotspur manager, has strongly criticized a segment of the club's fanbase for booing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario during their recent 2-1 home defeat against Fulham. Frank expressed his disappointment and questioned the loyalty of fans who would turn on their own player during a match.
The incident occurred during a tumultuous Saturday evening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Spurs conceded two goals in the opening six minutes. Kenny Tete scored a deflected shot in the fourth minute, putting Fulham ahead. Just two minutes later, Vicario's error led to Fulham's second goal. The Italian goalkeeper came far out of his goal and lost possession, allowing Harry Wilson to score from long range into an unguarded net.
Following the mistake, a section of Tottenham fans booed Vicario when he next touched the ball. The team was also booed off at halftime and full-time.
Frank acknowledged the fans' frustration with the team's performance, as Spurs have struggled at home recently. However, he drew a line at booing Vicario during the game. "I didn't like that our fans booed at him straight after and a few times when he touched the ball," Frank told Sky Sports after the defeat. "They can't be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you are on the pitch," he added. He stated that fans are entitled to boo after the game, but during the match, unity and support are essential. "That's unacceptable in my opinion," Frank concluded.
Vicario, who is in his third season with Tottenham, took responsibility for his mistake and addressed the boos he faced. "It's part of football, I'm a big man," he said. He also said, "The second goal was a mistake of mine, I take responsibility for that. The intent was to clear the ball long and I just hit the ball in a bad way". He admitted that the team needs to remain composed and focused despite the negativity from the stands. "We can't be influenced by the situation in the stands. The fans have the right to do what they think. It's on us to stay calm," Vicario stated.
Tottenham's poor home form has contributed to the growing discontent among fans. The loss to Fulham marked their 10th Premier League home defeat in 2025. After a promising start to Frank's reign, the team has now slipped to 10th place in the league, with only two wins in their last nine games.
Despite the setback, Frank emphasized the need for the team to stick together and work towards improvement. He acknowledged that conceding two early goals made it difficult for the team to recover. Mohammed Kudus scored a goal for Tottenham in the second half, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback. Frank said, "When you're down 2-0 after six minutes, there is a mountain to climb".
