Ranchi: In a historic moment at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, Rohit Sharma etched his name in the record books by becoming the batsman with the most sixes in One Day International (ODI) cricket. During the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Sharma surpassed Pakistan's Shahid Afridi's long-standing record of 351 sixes.
Sharma, who came into the series with 349 sixes, reached the milestone in the 15th over of the match. He first equaled Afridi's record by sending a delivery from South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen soaring over deep midwicket. He then claimed the record outright, clearing a pull off Marco Hansen over deep square leg.
The 38-year-old right-hander celebrated the landmark shortly after completing his 60th ODI half-century. He eventually fell for 57 off 50 balls, striking five fours and three sixes.
Afridi, known as "Boom Boom Afridi" for his aggressive batting style, set the previous record of 351 sixes in 398 ODI matches between 1996 and 2015. Sharma reached 352 sixes in his 278th ODI, achieving the feat in fewer innings.
Sharma debuted in 2007 and has been celebrated for his elegant yet destructive hitting. He is known for his effortless sixes and his ability to turn matches around with quick-fire innings. He led India to the Champions Trophy title earlier this year.
This achievement adds another feather to Sharma's cap, who has already retired from T20Is. He has 205 sixes in 151 innings in T20Is. He also has 89 sixes in his Test career.
India aims to bounce back against South Africa in the three-match ODI series after a defeat in the Test series. India will be led by KL Rahul in the absence of injured Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in action after their successful outing in Australia.
South Africa will be led by Aiden Markram, as Temba Bavuma is rested. The first ODI is taking place at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
