After a disappointing 2024-25 season, Jeremy Swayman's resurgence has been a major catalyst for the Boston Bruins' strong start in the 2025-26 season. The Bruins currently hold second place in the Atlantic Division, a position few predicted after they missed the playoffs last year for the first time in nine years.
Swayman's struggles last season were well-documented. After contract extension talks stalled, he missed training camp and preseason, hindering his preparation. His performance suffered, with a career-worst .892 save percentage and a 3.11 goals-against average. The team's overall defensive struggles didn't help, but it was clear Swayman wasn't at his best. He himself took accountability, stating that he "wanted to play better".
This season, however, is a different story. Swayman appears to be a rejuvenated player. Through 17 appearances, he boasts a record of 11-6-0, with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. According to MoneyPuck, his 19.4 goals saved above expected ranks first among goalies who have started at least 12 games this season. His improved play has instilled confidence throughout the Bruins' roster. Mark Kastelic noted that the team feeds off Swayman's confidence, allowing them to focus on their own jobs.
Coach Marco Sturm has taken notice, praising Swayman's stability both on and off the ice. Sturm emphasized the calming influence Swayman brings to each game, especially crucial given the injuries the team has faced. "Since Day 1, he's been rock-solid off the ice and on the ice," Sturm said. "The calmness he brings in every game and giving us a chance to win every game is a good feeling".
Swayman's success stems from a simplified approach. After feeling he had to "do it all" last season, he's now focusing on "just one shot at a time". Swayman himself emphasizes his gratitude for being a Bruin and brings that joy to every start. He describes his job as "being square, reactionary, and in front of everything".
Swayman's improved play has not gone unnoticed by his teammates. Morgan Geekie, who is having a strong season himself, is tied for the lead in the NHL with 20 goals.
Recently, Swayman delivered a strong performance in a 3-2 shootout victory against the Detroit Red Wings. He stopped 24 of 26 shots in regulation and overtime, then turned away all three Red Wings attempts in the shootout. This performance came on the heels of a career-high 44 saves on Long Island. Since a loss in Ottawa in late October, Swayman is 8-2-0 with a .934 save percentage and a 2.06 goals against average.
Looking ahead, Swayman hopes his performance with the Bruins will position him for a spot on the Olympic team. "It's a life goal of mine to be on the Olympic team," Swayman said. "I do know that if I do my job with the Boston Bruins, it's going to put me in a good position to be there one day".
With Jeremy Swayman back in top form, the Bruins have solidified their defense and goaltending, giving them a strong foundation for continued success this season.
