In a recent interview, Barcelona's rising star, Lamine Yamal, opened up about his decision to represent Spain over Morocco on the international stage, revealing it wasn't as straightforward as many might believe. The 18-year-old winger, born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, was eligible to play for all three nations. Yamal's choice was a subject of intense speculation, especially considering Morocco's impressive performance at the 2022 World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals.
"Deep down, I was thinking about playing with Morocco," Yamal confessed, acknowledging the appeal of joining a team fresh off a historic World Cup run. "At that time, Morocco had reached the World Cup semi-finals," he said. However, when the moment of truth arrived, Yamal's desire to compete in Europe ultimately swayed his decision. "But in the moment of truth, I never doubted," Yamal stated. "With all the love and respect I have for Morocco, I always wanted to play in the EURO and in Europe".
Yamal further explained that he believes European football offers a higher level of competition and greater visibility. "I believe European football is watched more, and I think it's closer to the international high level," he noted. This, he feels, gives him a better chance of achieving his ultimate ambition: winning the World Cup. "It also makes me close to the World Cup with chances to win it," Yamal added.
Despite choosing Spain, Yamal emphasized his deep connection to Morocco. "I will always carry love for Morocco, as it is my country too," he affirmed. He also acknowledged the significance of his upbringing in Spain, saying, "And I grew up in Spain, and I also feel that it is my country".
Yamal's decision mirrors that of Lionel Messi, who also had the option of representing Spain before choosing Argentina. Just as Argentina's coach convinced Messi to play for them, Spain was determined not to lose Yamal.
Since making his debut for Spain, Yamal has enjoyed considerable success. At just 16 years old, he became the youngest player to ever represent the nation. He has already made 23 appearances and scored six goals for Spain. Yamal played a role in Spain's Euro 2024 victory over England and helped his team reach the Nations League final against Portugal earlier this year.
Lamine Yamal's choice highlights the complex decisions faced by young, dual-nationality players in modern football. While Morocco will always hold a special place in his heart, Yamal is focused on his future with Spain and is eager to contribute to the nation's success on the European and world stage. Alongside fellow Barcelona talent Pau Cubarsí, Yamal represents the next generation of Spanish football.
