Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has expressed confidence that the club's ownership will grant him the necessary time to cultivate success, despite recent setbacks and growing fan frustration. The team's recent form has been concerning, with only three wins in their last 13 games across all competitions. This includes a string of disappointing results, such as draws against Manchester United and losses to Paris Saint-Germain, Fulham, and Arsenal. The most recent defeat, a 2-1 loss at home to Fulham, saw the team booed off the pitch, intensifying the pressure on Frank.
Frank, who was appointed this past summer, acknowledged the fans' discontent but remained steadfast in his belief that the owners, led by the Lewis family and CEO Vinai Venkatesham, understand the process of building a successful and sustainable club. "It seems like they're good guys, intelligent people," Frank stated. "They know how to run businesses and are learning about football, learning more now they've become owners". He emphasized that "when we're dealing with intelligent people, they can see every successful dynasty, every successful club has taken time".
The departure of Daniel Levy as chairman in September marked a significant shift in the club's leadership structure, with the Lewis family taking a more prominent role. Frank has had constructive conversations with the owners, including Vivienne and Charles Lewis, and Peter Charrington, the new non-executive chairman. These discussions have instilled in him a sense of backing and alignment regarding the club's ambitions and strategy. Frank believes it's important for owners to be visible and transparent, fostering a connection with the fans.
Frank has also drawn upon his past experiences to reinforce his conviction. He recounted his initial struggles at both Brondby and Brentford, where he faced periods without wins before turning things around and achieving success. "At Brondby I think we didn't win in eight, and then we were unbeaten in nine," he said. "At Brentford were the same, we lost eight out of ten, and then we were unbeaten in ten". He asserted his ability to build consistency, competitiveness, and a strong culture within a team, acknowledging that this process inevitably takes time.
Despite the recent struggles, Frank maintains that he is focused on building something sustainable at Tottenham, emphasizing the importance of "building layers" rather than seeking immediate success. He believes that this approach, while requiring patience, will ultimately lead to a more organic and lasting success. Frank's immediate concern is to improve the team's performance and reconnect with the fans, starting with their upcoming match against Newcastle. He has called on the supporters to rally behind the team and trust in the long-term vision, despite the current challenges.
