Hyderabad Buzzes as Hardik Pandya Returns to Action in SMAT 2025
Hyderabad, December 2, 2025: Hardik Pandya's return to competitive cricket has ignited excitement among fans and selectors alike, as he gears up to represent Baroda in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Making his first professional appearance since late September, Pandya's performance is under close scrutiny ahead of India's T20I series against South Africa, scheduled to begin on December 9.
Pandya's comeback match against Punjab at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad was marked by a palpable buzz. After being sidelined due to a left quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup Super Fours match against Sri Lanka on September 26, the all-rounder has been diligently working on his fitness at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He joined the facility on October 15, took a brief Diwali break, and resumed his intensive rehabilitation program from October 21 to November 29.
The match witnessed a significant moment when a fan breached security to get a selfie with Pandya. The incident occurred while Pandya was on the field, showcasing his popularity and the excitement surrounding his return. The fan managed to approach Pandya and snap a picture before being escorted away by security. Pandya, known for his affable nature, was seen gesturing to the security personnel, seemingly requesting them not to be too harsh with the fan.
While Pandya's return is a major boost for Baroda, who had a shaky start to their SMAT campaign, his performance in the tournament is crucial for his chances of making it to the national squad for the T20I series against South Africa. National selector Pragyan Ojha is expected to attend Baroda's matches to assess Pandya's match-readiness and fitness. According to BCCI sources, Pandya has received clearance from the Centre of Excellence to play in the SMAT.
In the match against Punjab, Pandya bowled his full quota of overs, conceding 52 runs and taking one wicket. He also contributed with the bat, scoring a fifty and single-handedly keeping Baroda in the run chase. Despite his efforts, Baroda lost the match to Punjab.
Pandya's return to competitive cricket is a welcome sign for Indian cricket, which has missed his all-round abilities. His presence in the SMAT is not only an opportunity for him to regain his form but also for the selectors to evaluate his readiness for international cricket. As the T20I series against South Africa approaches, all eyes will be on Hardik Pandya as he aims to make a strong comeback to the Indian team.
