Harendra Singh's Coaching Style Sparks Player Uprising Leading to Resignation: A Report on Antiquated Methods.

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) – Harendra Singh's abrupt resignation as the head coach of the Indian women's hockey team was triggered by a wave of player complaints citing his "outdated and dictatorial" coaching style. While Hockey India's official statement mentioned "personal reasons" for his departure, sources reveal a deeper discord between the coach and the team members.

Several senior players lodged complaints with the Union Sports Ministry about Harendra's "high-handedness" and expressed their unwillingness to continue playing under his leadership. This was reportedly not the first instance of players raising concerns about his methods, with initial complaints made to the Target Olympic Podium division months prior.

Following the complaints, the Sports Ministry directed Hockey India to investigate the matter. Consequently, Hockey India's top officials, including President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary-General Bhola Nath Singh, convened meetings with the players at the Sports Authority of India's (SAI) Bengaluru center. These individual discussions revealed a fractured team environment, with nearly half the players expressing a desire for a change in leadership, citing a "toxic environment". Allegations included "mental harassment," placing players under "extreme pressure," and showing favoritism towards the captain and vice-captain. An unsigned letter outlining these allegations surfaced, though its authenticity remains unconfirmed by Hockey India.

In addition to behavioral concerns, players also raised issues regarding the rising number of injuries and dissatisfaction with the team's recent performances. While Harendra Singh led the team to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir last year, the team's performance in other competitions has been lackluster. India was relegated from the FIH Pro League after finishing last in the 2024-25 season. The team also suffered a defeat to China in the Asia Cup final, jeopardizing their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Harendra Singh's coaching philosophy has been described as one revolving around discipline, teamwork, and adaptability. He is known for combining traditional Indian flair with modern European hockey techniques. Some have noted his no-nonsense attitude and emphasis on rigorous training. He also emphasizes player empowerment, encouraging athletes to take ownership of their performance. However, it appears that his methods may have become "outdated" for some players, leading to the recent unrest.

Hockey India has accepted Harendra Singh's resignation and acknowledged his contributions to Indian hockey. While the federation searches for a suitable replacement, the focus will likely be on finding a coach who can create a more positive and inclusive team environment while also improving the team's performance on the field.
