Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes that Matheus Cunha, despite his solid start at Old Trafford, still has room for improvement. The Brazilian international, who joined the Red Devils in June for £62.5 million from Wolves, has shown glimpses of his potential but has only found the net once in 11 appearances.
Speaking ahead of Manchester United's Premier League clash against West Ham, Amorim addressed Cunha's form and his overall influence on the team. "I think he has more levels to go," Amorim stated. "He is in a different club, different pressure, but I think he copes with that really well".
Amorim suggested that the 26-year-old forward had been putting too much pressure on himself to score goals. "He was struggling because he was not scoring and he was thinking too much about the numbers," Amorim explained. However, he emphasized Cunha's importance to the team beyond just goals. "The influence that he has in the team is so important for us," he added. Amorim believes Cunha has the potential to further develop both his offensive and defensive contributions. "I think Cunha has so much to grow defensively and offensively".
Cunha's return to the squad comes as a boost for Manchester United, as he missed the last two matches due to a knock picked up in training. Amorim confirmed Cunha is back in training and available to face West Ham. His return provides Amorim with more options in attack, especially with Benjamin Sesko still sidelined. Amorim had previously highlighted Cunha's similar characteristics to Joshua Zirkzee, indicating the Brazilian's importance in maintaining the team's tactical approach.
In other team news, Amorim revealed that there are a couple of fresh injury doubts within the squad ahead of the West Ham game, but he did not disclose the players' identities. Harry Maguire remains on the sidelines alongside Sesko. Lisandro Martinez made his comeback as a late substitute in the previous match against Crystal Palace.
Manchester United will be looking to build on their recent 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace when they face West Ham. Amorim also offered words of encouragement for young defender Leny Yoro, who conceded a penalty in the win against Crystal Palace. Amorim acknowledged Yoro's disappointment after the mistake and highlighted the importance of support for the young player.
