Sean Dyche Baffled by Lengthy VAR Decision During Forest Win at Wolves
Wolverhampton, England – Nottingham Forest secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, but the match was overshadowed by a lengthy VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decision that left Forest manager Sean Dyche perplexed. Igor Jesus scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute, but earlier in the game, his apparent opener was ruled out after a review that took over five minutes.
In the 38th minute, Jesus headed in from an Omari Hutchinson corner, seemingly giving Forest the lead. However, the goal was subjected to a prolonged VAR check. The review focused on a potential offside infringement by Dan Ndoye, who was positioned in front of Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. After a painstaking deliberation process lasting five minutes and 33 seconds, VAR official Rob Jones instructed referee Tim Robinson to consult the pitch-side monitor, who then confirmed the offside, leading to the goal being disallowed.
Dyche expressed his bewilderment at the length of the VAR review. "That, for me, is miles too long," he stated. He questioned the number of people involved in the decision-making process, suggesting that a quicker resolution should have been possible. "There's a lot of people sitting in those rooms, and if that decision is the final one, that can be made a lot quicker than that".
The Forest manager acknowledged the importance of VAR in ensuring correct decisions but emphasized the need for efficiency. Dyche also questioned the necessity of referees addressing the crowd after a decision is made, deeming it a "waste" of time. "Just call it and get on with it. I really don't understand it," he added.
Despite the disallowed goal, Nottingham Forest persisted, and Jesus eventually found the net in the second half. Hutchinson provided the assist once again, with Jesus heading home to score his first Premier League goal. Wolves pushed for an equalizer, but Forest held on to secure a valuable three points on the road.
The victory marked Nottingham Forest's first back-to-back Premier League away wins since January. For Wolves, the defeat extended their winless league run at home to nine games.
Dyche had played down the significance of facing fellow strugglers Wolves before the game. Wolves have had a poor start to the season and are one of three teams in Europe's top five leagues yet to register a league win this season. However, the win was crucial for Forest, who are looking to climb up the Premier League table.
The match statistics highlight a competitive encounter. Wolves had more possession, but Forest were more clinical in front of goal. Ultimately, Igor Jesus's header proved to be the difference between the two sides.
While the result was positive for Nottingham Forest, Sean Dyche's post-match comments underscored the ongoing debate surrounding the efficiency and implementation of VAR in football.
