Slot Voices Concern Over Anfield's Aura After Sunderland Draw
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed concern that Anfield may be losing its intimidating aura for visiting teams, following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Wednesday. The defending Premier League champions were held by the newly-promoted side, needing a deflected equalizer to salvage a point.
Chemsdine Talbi's goal in the 67th minute threatened to upset Liverpool, until Florian Wirtz's shot deflected off Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele and into the net. Even after the equalizer, Sunderland almost snatched a late victory, but Federico Chiesa cleared Wilson Isidor's shot off the goal line.
Slot acknowledged that opponents no longer fear coming to Anfield. "It is clear that teams who play us think they can get a result," the head coach said after the match. He noted Sunderland's compact defensive setup made it difficult for Liverpool to create clear-cut chances. "They either go really aggressive and press high, or go really, really compact when low. A lot of other teams have had problems with them".
Despite the draw feeling like two points dropped after their win against West Ham, Slot praised his team's reaction to going behind. "I really liked our reaction afterwards. I think you saw a team that wanted to make the equalizer and when we did, we tried everything to make the winner," Slot stated. He also credited Federico Chiesa's late goal-line clearance, saying, "That's what you want a player to do, give everything in a situation".
Liverpool struggled to break down Sunderland's defense, often appearing disjointed in possession. Slot opted to keep Mohamed Salah out of the starting XI for the second consecutive game, bringing him on at halftime. Alexander Isak also struggled to make an impact.
The Liverpool boss described the game as one where his team "didn't concede a lot and we didn't create a lot". He added that the goal they conceded was "very unlucky," deflecting in off a player.
Sunderland's manager, Regis Le Bris, expressed satisfaction with the result, despite missing the chance to secure their first league win at Anfield since 1983. "We started well. Probably we didn't believe enough that it was possible to score," he said.
The draw leaves Liverpool in eighth place in the Premier League. Slot will be looking for solutions to reignite Anfield's fear factor as they aim to climb the table.
