Soungoutou Magassa's late equalizer secured a 1-1 draw for West Ham United against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday, denying the home side a chance to move up to fifth place in the Premier League. Diogo Dalot's goal in the 58th minute had initially given Manchester United the lead, but Magassa's composed finish from a late corner kick ensured that the Hammers left with a valuable point.
The match, played in tribute to the late Billy Bonds, West Ham's record appearance maker and two-time FA Cup-winning captain, saw the travelling Hammers inspired to a determined performance. Despite Manchester United's dominance in possession and territory for much of the game, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. West Ham's resilience earned them a point, showcasing their fighting spirit under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Manchester United had an opportunity to take the lead in the first half, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the post. West Ham also had their chances, with Jarrod Bowen's shot being saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Dalot eventually broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, scoring his first league goal at Old Trafford after latching onto a deflected shot from Casemiro.
However, West Ham continued to fight and found an equalizer in the 82nd minute through Magassa. Bowen flicked a corner towards goal, and after Noussair Mazraoui cleared it off the line, Magassa was there to bury the chance. In the closing seconds, Fernandes volleyed wide after a poor clearance from the visitors, sealing the draw.
The draw means Manchester United move up to eighth place, while West Ham remain in the relegation zone. This result marks the first Premier League draw between Manchester United and West Ham since July 2020.
