Manchester United were left to rue missed opportunities as West Ham United snatched a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Thursday night, thanks to a late equaliser from Soungoutou Magassa. The result sees Manchester United's hopes of climbing into the top five of the Premier League table frustrated, while West Ham secured a valuable point in their fight to move further away from the relegation zone.
The first half was a tale of two phases, with West Ham initially asserting themselves before Manchester United gained control. West Ham threatened early, with Mateus Fernandes and Jean-Clair Todibo forcing Casemiro and Ayden Heaven to make crucial blocks within the first eight minutes. Jarrod Bowen also saw his effort blocked by Casemiro. United gradually responded, creating a series of chances. Bryan Mbeumo's dipping shot forced a fingertip save from Alphonse Areola. Shortly after, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a former United player, cleared Joshua Zirkzee's close-range shot off the line. Bowen broke free before his shot was partially blocked by Luke Shaw and collected by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute by Diogo Dalot, who slotted home from close range after Casemiro's shot fell into his path. It was Dalot's first Premier League goal at Old Trafford. However, instead of building on their lead, United allowed West Ham back into the game. West Ham's persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when Soungoutou Magassa fired home his first goal for the club following a corner. Andy Irving's corner was flicked on by Bowen, and after Noussair Mazraoui cleared Bowen's header off the line, Magassa tucked the ball into the bottom corner.
In the aftermath of the equaliser, West Ham appeared the more likely to snatch a winner, but the game ended in a draw. Reflecting on the game, Dalot expressed his disappointment, stating the team needed to control the game better, especially at Old Trafford, and avoid becoming anxious after scoring. West Ham's manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, praised his team's performance and fighting spirit.
Manchester United made three changes to their starting lineup, with Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven, and Matheus Cunha coming into the team. West Ham were without the suspended Lucas Paqueta, with Tomas Soucek replacing him in midfield.
